Reading Up on Groomdom

As is my custom after church, I spend a few hours every Sunday at Barnes and Noble on Edgewood. This past Sunday, I read parts of 3 books; The Groom’s Game Plan, Groomolgy, and The Knot Guide for the Groom.

All of them had wonderful tips and helpful hints for planning, budgeting, saving, etc. Now, the other invaluable resources are obviously friends who have had similar experiences, and naturally, I listen to their sage advice as well. For instance, my current quandary is surrounding my attire for the big day. Being that our wedding is in Charleston, SC either in late summer or early fall, the temperature shift could be a good ten to fifteen degrees. I’m a huge fan of khaki suits, and it just so happens that a groom in a khaki suit is as synonymous with Charleston as palmetto trees and straw baskets.

However, there is something to be said for the classically brilliant elegance of a well fitting tuxedo. I do want to stand out, and be dashing while doing so, and I think I could pull off the well appointed khaki suit or the tailored tuxedo and do just that. But the advice I received from a friend was that my attire should be dictated by that of the dress of my bride-to-be; sage advice.

Whatever we do…no rented clothing whatsoever; no slouching…

Those books, and any others that I can get my hands on are helping me to be supportive, respectful, innovative and all-encompassing when it comes to being as helpful a groom as possible.

No sandals though...

The general idea

Perfect fit

Cool pic, and I WILL bite it...but look at the slouch nature of the trousers. No...sir.

“…and in all things that we do…”

I’m going to a wedding this weekend of a Morehouse Man and a Spelman Woman. I hope, that at some point in the evening, that we go through the normal ritual of singing the school hymns. I look forward to the singing of the Morehouse College hymn, ‘Dear Old Morehouse’ written by the class of 1928’s J.O.B. Moseley because it’s all the excitement, pageantry, uniqueness and wonderfully special nature that my college experience was…all rolled neatly into a beautiful song. I look forward to singing it at me and Lauren’s wedding.

The Social Network

I truly cannot wait to see this movie. I know very little about the history of Facebook, but as many times as I’ve said, “I’m gonna tell Zuckerberg a thing or two…” I figure I owe it to myself and him to see this film. The cover of ‘Creep’ is quietly intoxicating…well, not so quietly.

Welcome Back…

Today was my first day back at Morehouse, and the Admissions Assistant, and one of my Morehouse Moms, Kim G started singing the John Sebastian classic ‘Welcome Back’. What a more fitting song for the day?

Happy Anniversary to my friends…

In 2005 and 2007 respectively, I was proud to be in the weddings of four of my friends; Antoy Bell and Te’iva Johnson and Spence Humphrey and Alison James.

Antoy and Te’iva got married on August 6, 2005 on a blazing Texas day in Houston, and Spence and Alison got married on August 4, 2007 on a blazing Georgia day in Atlanta.

I was fortunate enough to be one of Antoy’s Best Men and also to serve as one of Spence’s groomsmen.

Whether they know it or not, they have been wonderful examples for me in husbandry, and their relationships with their wives and the respect, love and admiration that they have shown their wives has been very telling of the men that both of them are.

So I say, Happy Anniversary to my friends.

The Most Important Year

Today my fiancee called me and told me that she was checking out venues for our upcoming wedding next fall. I have been overly excited for some time about our wedding, and now that we’re closing in on one year out, I am getting even more excited. Very soon we’ll be visiting venues, deciding on dates and vendors and before you know it, the official planning will be in full swing.

To document what happens, what I learn, where we go and what we see, I figured I’d start this blog; The Most Important Year. Tomorrow for instance, I start a new job at Morehouse College. That is a very big part of this important year, and in two weeks, we’re going to check out a number of venues, decide on themes, etc.

My friend Brock told me about a book called, ‘The Most Important Year In A Man’s Life’ about the year prior to marriage. Well, I plan on reading it, and sharing my journey here.

So, with no further delay…the year has begun.
